2019 Mural Fest finalists announced

The results are in! Judges of the annual International Mural Fest art competition and festival have announced the 2019 finalists – and they include BMCAN member Trish Smart.

‘I’m thrilled to have been selected as a finalist again’, said Trish, who has collected People’s Choice and runner-up awards in previous Mural Fests.

The competition is held over Easter in Sheffield, Tasmania in a purpose-built outdoor art gallery, and it attracts artists and visitors from around the nation and globe.

‘We had to submit a small version of the proposed mural inspired by a theme poem provided by the organisers’, Trish says.

‘Being selected as a finalist, we’ll have just six days to recreate the work on a three-by-five metre panel. It’s exciting because it all happens in front of the live audience!’

This year marks Trish’s thirtieth anniversary as a commercial mural artist. ‘I must have painted more than a thousand murals over the years’, she says.

More recently, she has begun to explore other media again.

‘I no longer paint ceilings because of neck problems, and climbing ladders gets more dangerous as you get older. That’s why I’ve been exploring other media again. I trained as a printmaker and still enjoy engraving, woodcuts and lino prints. I also paint in oils but my favourite medium at the moment is ceramics.’

When asked what inspires her, Trish says, ‘Nature – but also science. I have a series of etchings based on plant cells seen under a microscope. I’m also fascinated by waratahs, Banksia cones and native birds.’

You can drop by to ask Trish how she fared in this year’s Mural Fest – she will be opening her Spinebill Studios for the next BMCAN Arts Trail on Saturday 4 & Sunday 5 May, or watch the event live on ‘muralCAM’ at www.kentish.tas.gov.au.
